Rubia was rescued by our partner association Mastines En La Calle in October 2024, and has been in foster with one of the HFP team since February.

We first met Rubia in February during a team visit to Spain, and she was a very shy & frightened little pod who wouldn’t come near any of us and spent the whole time circling the boundary of the secure kennel area. It can be difficult to find homes for dogs like Rubia due to the time, patience and understanding required in bringing them round and most importantly giving them the time to start building trust. We decided that she would come to the UK as a foster to kick start that process!

Rubia spent quite a lot of time in her ‘safe space’ under a bed, and at first every movement was very frantic and full of fear. She would bolt into the garden and try desperately to find a way to escape, and would roll around on the lead in a panic. Now, almost two months on - she still enjoys her safe space but also enjoys time around the house with the other dogs, and if you’re sitting relaxing she will come and join you on the couch - from a distance. When visitors come in, she is curious and up to see what’s going on and who they are. She absolutely ADORES being outdoors, when she is out on walks her tail is up, she’s interested & curious, she’s happy to get fusses from her foster and even strangers. She really enjoys the company of other dogs of all shapes & sizes and has a lovely playful side which has been coming out more and more. She is still skittish and although she is happy to be handled, she isn’t at the stage yet where she is seeking out affection or cuddles. What we’ve seen from her progress so far though, is that there is a happy, content and fun little pod personality in there just waiting to shine and all she needs is someone who is willing to give her the time and help her to blossom.

Rubia would really benefit from at least one other dog in the home, and to be somewhere with a super secure garden that she can have plenty of access to - she is a flight risk so needs 5-6ft boundaries with no gaps. The walks she really enjoys are countryside but currently she lives urban with access to more rural feeling walks. She also lives with older children at the moment, she is nervous around sudden movements so wouldn’t recommend young kids purely as it would hinder progress for her.

Rubia is neutered, vaccinated, and tested for all Mediterranean diseases. She is passported and available for adoption now.
